After being without a youth orchestra for two decades, Tauranga saw the birth of the Youth Philharmonic Tauranga during a symphonic workshop in October 2016. After that, YPT settled into a routine of two well-attended concerts per year, mostly at the Graham Young Youth Theatre. In 2018, a concert was presented at the Performing Arts Centre of Otumoetai College, in collaboration with the Bay of Plenty Symphonia. In 2019, YPT participated in a weekend camp with three other youth orchestras of the North Island. Since that year, YPT organises yearly summer workshop weekends for current and prospective players. The Music Director and main conductor is Justus Rozemond, who also conducts the Bay of Plenty Symphonia.
