The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2011 by a group of enthusiastic Jazz musicians residing in the Wakatipu area. All members have extensive musical backgrounds and have been part of the music scene in Queenstown and the Wakatipu Basin for many years. Additional musicians and vocalists join the Orchestra for specific functions and events. Its aim is to attract Jazz musicians of all ages and to encourage young musicians to participate in big band Jazz music. 

The 16-piece big band line-up, featuring the region's top jazz musicians and vocalists, perform big band classics from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Buddy Rich; through to popular vocals from the big band era. The band has played at numerous functions and social events over the years including the Christchurch Big Band Festivals, Jazz in Concert in Wanaka, Queenstown and Arrowtown, the Queenstown Winter Festival, the Alexandra Blossom Festival, Queenstown Jazz Festivals, Arrowtown Spring Swing, Queenstown Wine and Food Festivals, Anzac Day concerts, Oamaru Harbour Street Jazz and Blues Festival, concerts in the Queenstown Gardens as well as many private and corporate events. 

The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra is a non-for-profit community band and is an Incorporated Society.
