Description
Giving voice, playing instruments, and composing are unique and vital human activities. Our music practices tackle questions of embodiment and environment, performative, notational, and recorded time, and programming in all senses of the term. From stages, concert halls, and clubs to electroacoustic and digital studios, site-specific and online sonic arts, we invest an exciting creative spectrum. Our academic expertise in areas such as history, anthropology and ethnology, art and popular music, and cultural studies are extended by collaborations with computer science, language, film, media studies, and many other disciplines.
New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī (NZSM) is committed to artistic, scholarly, and social values, and to the diversity that sustains them. Classical Performance, Jazz, and Composition programs awarding Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral qualifications hone skills for a wide range of professions. We host the country's only Music Therapy postgraduate degree and an industry-oriented Master of Fine Arts in Creative Practice.
Internationally acclaimed artists and academics in a research-intensive university make us New Zealand's foremost school of music. Our performance teaching is enriched by engagement with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra principals, the resident New Zealand String Quartet, and leading jazz musicians. Artists and scholars from all over the world ensure masterclasses and workshops, public performances, lectures, and seminars, while NZSM staff's prestigious international activities enhance our experience and profile.
We thrive on the synergies gained by mixing traditional and new knowledges and techniques, skills, and networks. We revel in the singularity of virtuoso performance and the empowerment of collective music-making. We champion music's challenges to cultural standardisation, and its capacity to critically spur technological development. Te Kōkī, the dawn chorus, signals our hallmark Asia-Pacific identity, in harmony with global sonic cultures. Join us, to tune to the inspirational resonances of the New Zealand School of Music.

If your orchestra is missing, please let us know. We strive for accuracy but mistakes can happen. Please share any corrections or additional information you have about your group.
